Effluent Treatment

WEC Projects offers various effluent treatment options designed to remove various contaminants from wastewater.

Effluent Treatment Solutions

In many industries, there is a large amount of wastewater discharge. The water generally requires complex treatment solutions in order to turn into safe water, either for drinking, environmental compliance or even to have the ability to remove precious metals from the water.

WEC Projects uses various effluent treatments that depend on the chemical composition as well as  flow rates. These treatments also range in size, from small-scale projects (such as 50m3 per day, such as in metal fabrication, leachate or food factories) to much larger projects (such as 5000m3 per day such as in large industrial plants and mines).

Effluent treatment is designed to remove contaminants such as:

  • Suspended solids
  • Fats, oils and greases
  • Organic material (dairies and breweries)
  • Biological waste (sewage treatment)
  • Dissolved salts (sodium, sulphate, chloride, potassium, etc.)

Benefits of Effluent Treatment

  • Avoid penalty charges– due to exceedance of municipal and national wastewater  discharge standards
  • Become environmentally friendly– important for reasons of corporate governance and sustainability
  • Resource recovery– such as water, biogas (see image) or even precious metals

Effluent Treatment in Industry

Reverse Osmosis

Membrane technology, such as reverse osmosis, is commonly employed in industry to remove inorganic salts from wastewater streams (reverse osmosis membrane technology).

Resource Recovery

Recovering resources is greatly beneficial, if economically feasible

  • Recovered water can become very useful for drinking or for industrial process water (e.g. mining)
  • Biogas – food factories that produce effluent streams with a lot of organic material, for example, can generate biogas. Biogas can be used as an energy source (biogas-to-energy)
  • Metals – mining and metal finishing industries can benefit from recovering valuable metals from effluent streams
