Customised Operations and Maintenance Services

WEC Assist is the operations and maintenance (O&M) department of WEC Projects. O&M options include full-time and part-time on-site plant operators; remote supervision; scheduled site visits; plant audits; sampling and analysis and operator training services to ensure that our clients’ water and sewage treatment plants function optimally and comply with legislated discharge limits.
Due to the specialist nature of water and sewage treatment operations and maintenance, often the clients’ personnel lack the experience or adequate training required to operate their water treatment plants efficiently. WEC Assist offers a range of flexible O&M options according to client requirements and budget. The following standard options are available:
  • Full-time and part-time on-site plant operators
  • Weekly, monthly and quarterly site visits
  • Remote plant monitoring
  • Full-time and part-time remote support
  • Operator training
This provides peace of mind that our clients water and sewage treatment plants are properly operated, maintained and performing according to their design specifications and within legal discharge limits, reducing the risk of fines and environmental damage caused by poor plant operations and maintenance.
WEC Assist O&M services are technology and vendor neutral, which allows the company to provide services for all water and sewage treatment plants whether domestic, commercial or industrial across Africa as well as overseas.

Plant Surveys, Audits, Reporting and Recommendations

Water and sewage treatment plants require regular maintenance checks and adjustments by trained and competent operators. Often due to a lack of expertise, time or money these plants slowly degrade, becoming inefficient at treating water properly and eventually break down.
We recommend performing a thorough plant inspection and audit. We include the following in our plant audit scope of works:
  • Sampling and analysis of both the incoming raw sewage water and the outgoing effluent water
  • MLSS sampling and lab analysis to determine the concentration and condition of activated sludge (bacteria) within the reactor
  • Performing sludge volume (SV) tests from both the reactor and the clarifier to determine the volume of activated sludge in the water which will indicate de-sludging intervals
  • Mechanical checks of the plant’s blowers, valves, RAS lines, etc, to determine if they are in working order
  • Comprehensive reports based on the results which include recommendations and solutions.
The results from the audits are used to compile a comprehensive report detailing the plants overall functionality and also our recommendations regarding the need for refurbishment, upgrading and replacement of equipment.

Chemicals

We supply a wide range of chemicals in a variety of sizes and packages for water and sewage treatment purposes:
  • Sodium hypochlorite
  • Sodium hydroxide
  • Sodium metabisulphite
  • Sodium tripolyphosphate
  • Sodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic
  • Hydrochloric acid
  • Ferric chloride
  • Sulfuric acid
  • Calcium hydroxide
  • Spectraguard anti-scalant
  • Biotech 775
For less common water treatment chemicals we will source these on our client’s behalf.

Consumables

We offer all media and consumables required for water and sewage treatment purposes to ensure optimum plant operation. These include:
  • AFM media
  • Silica sand
  • Granular activated carbon
  • Replacement filter cartridges
  • Diffusers
  • Blower service kits and oil
  • Dosing pump service kits
  • Bearings, seals and gaskets

Equipment

The water treatment process is demanding and places severe pressure on water treatment plants and equipment. This, coupled with the remote and challenging conditions that many plants are expected to perform under, has obligated us to use the most reliable, premium quality equipment that the market has to offer to ensure a longer operating lifespan.
Over time even the best equipment will degrade due to normal wear and tear. WEC Assist offers a backup sales service and can assist clients by creating a custom critical equipment spares list which can be ordered periodically depending on requirements. These can include:
  • Sewage pumps
  • Booster pumps
  • Dosing pumps
  • Dosing tanks
  • Blowers
  • Mixers
  • Sensors
  • Actuated valves
  • Diffusers
  • Electronic switchgear
  • Control panels

Green Solutions

Africa has a water scarcity and sustainability problem which has a direct impact on its economic and social welfare. In addition, aging water and sewage infrastructure has led to regular water shortages. As a result, innovative solutions such as water harvesting, recycling and usage reduction have become critical in both urban and rural areas.
WEC Assist offers a broad range of solutions designed to help commercial, industrial and domestic users to reduce their water consumption; re-use and recycle water where possible; and to optimise sewage treatment and effluent in order to minimise the impact on the environment and ensure a sustainable, water-secure future for the continent. These include:
  • Rainwater harvesting
  • Grey water recycling
  • Borehole water and groundwater harvesting
  • Smart water metering
  • Groundwater level monitoring
  • Back-up water supply
  • Water efficiency devices
  • Green building council green star rating accreditation
The proper operation and maintenance of water and sewage treatment plants is critical in terms of both the social and environmental impact that improperly treated effluent has on water security in Africa. We provide our clients with complete end-to-end solutions designed to reduce risk; ensure compliance with legislation; and maintain environmental compatibility.
